The490CW has it's geatest strength is its widespread connectivity. Both the Ethernet and USB ports are conveniently placed under the scanner cover.

Wireless connectivity can be initiated straight from the Brother 490CW. However, you are unable to use these network interfaces at the same time.

The490CWincludes an automatic document feeder and media card slots supporting SD, CompactFlash, MemoryStick and xD cards, and a handy PictBridge-capable USB port.

Paper capacity is quite adequate for home use. It features a front-facing, 100-sheet paper input cassette and a separate 20-sheet photo paper tray. The separate trays are a good idea because it keeps media of different sizes separate. The photo tray is manual, and you simply move it into position before use.

Granted, it's not automatic, but what do you expect from an all in one printer that you can buy from Amazon.com for less than 80.00?!? Right now, is definitely a good time to buy the 490cw!

The Brother 490CW is quite similar in appearance to other Brother units that have come out in the last 2 years or so. A tilting 3.3in display is placed directly on the center of the printer, with fax controls on the left, and copy and menu navigation buttons on the right.

You can have fast access buttons to fax, copy, capture photos or scan by using a variety of presets. An ink management button enables you to monitor cleaning and ink status menus.

The 490CW boasts speeds of up to 33 pages per minute for mono pages at 450x150 dots per inch, and up to 27ppm at 600x150dpi for color printing. You can also access the "fast normal"quality settings, which creates even sharper text.

The speed of photo printing is better than average. We adjusted the normal quality setting, and a basic 4x6in picture printed at about 17.5 seconds, and an A4 photo printed in 42.3 seconds. These speeds are quite good, and more than acceptable for home use.

The Brother 490CW definitely creates fine quality documents and photos. Regular text documents are clear and sharp when using a standard font size.

Color documents are better than average as well. The490CWmixes text and colour highlights well without reducing character clarity.

The depth of colors in pictures is extra rich and vibrant, especially yellows and reds. Other colors were surprisingly rich as well. Very remarkable for an all in one priced well under 100.00!

Scan quality really surprised me, and scanning is pretty fast. pictures scanned at 600dpi are detailed and very true to the original.

The scanner on the 490CW is better equipped for documents as opposed to photos, though the photo scans were better than avrage.
