My family has had Brother typewriters and sewing machines for a long time, so I am familiar with the structural integrity and reliability from a printer made by this company.

The Brother 490CW is good looking and stylish, compact, and portable. It is more "cool" looking than other all in ones in this price range. That is, if a "cool" looking piece of office equipment means something to you.

A very handy and nice design feature is the built-in electrical cord, no more cords trailing behind you.

Set-up was very quick, simple, and right out of the box it was simple to get all the features working. The Brother 490CW has a nice sized color LCD screen, and the intuitive menus are absolutely easy to follow. That's great for me, as I have an alergy to instruction manuals!

Selecting a document type when scanning is a breeze, and this can really save you time.(my HP only scans as a .jpg). The 490CWmakes it possible to scan and create files as .jpg, .pdf and other document types –no more hassles with file conversions.

Trouble-Free: I really made an attempt to over use this printer. and in three weeks of use, printed more than 1200 pages and it never froze or jammed up. (the duty cycle is a respectable 2400 pages per month, and now I know it's true!).

When I am testing a product, I like to send in a fake problem email to support. In this case, I stated that I had problems getting the wireless network feature to work. Brother support complied with a fast reply and simple-to-understand tips and troubleshooting help.
